Bob Hope was the guest Johnny liked the least. He could come on whenever he wanted to plug his specials even at the last minute and stay on as long as he wanted. He also couldn’t function without queue cards whereas Johnny was very spontaneous.

Too bad Harris isn't interviewed on here. He could tell hysterically funny stories. There are a lot of those on Letterman talking about his escapades with Peter O'Toole. Then when Peter was on Letterman, Dave would get the other side of the story. Great story tellers just like Hope

Bob Hope was Carson’s least favorite guest. He could come on any time he wanted for as long as he wanted to promote his specials for NBC and couldn’t do anything without his queue cards. Johnny was more open and spontaneous. It drove Johnny crazy to no end.

What a great wit! One of my favorite lines came from the silver screen: [Co-star]: "A zombie has no will of his own. You see them sometimes, walking around blindly: dead eyes; following orders; not knowing what they do; not caring. [Bob Hope:] You mean like the democrats?"

This man was a gift, not only on the screen but for entertaining the service men as well. Count less times u always see or hear about the shows and specials he gave. He was a talent and a hero for our soldiers serving overseas. Plus him and Bing Crosby had some funny movies. Robin Williams took over the mantle after Bob, both are missed for what they did. Bless them both.

Bob was so rich, I am not rich but i'm comfortable financially, having a lot of money means nothing when you get old, cause life is about to end so what difference does it make if you have a million dollars in the bank? None, it'll all go to someone else in a few days. LOL life is short folks.

Maybe I'm a minority of one, but I never found Bob Hope to be especially amusing or entertaining. Mostly, his jokes seemed contrived and scripted. They are the words of joke writers, spoken through Hope's voice, dead-pan fashion, with no sense of spontaneity.

I met Bob Hope and stood three feet away from him while he was recording what I think, was his last Christmas Special. Me and my wife. Not entirely sure if that was his last Christmas Special or not. They were filming at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs around '92 or '93. I had already seen him during his Desert Shield tour but I was stationed at Fort Carson when he did the Christmas Special. At the Antlers I watched him get madder and madder and madder. He just about exploded a couple of times. But he was mad at himself. He could not remember his lines. This was 92 or 93 so he was about 90 years old at the time. He was standing at the entrance to the Antlers Hotel. To his left was parked a black Limo with Miss America inside. They would say go, or action or whatever, the Limo would pull forward about 10 feet into the camera range, Miss America would get out, she was wearing white Fur Coat, and Bob Hope would greet her and say something funny. He kept forgetting the line, sometimes he would get half of what he would say out, sometimes he would forget the line entirely, sometimes he would get the entire thing out but it wasn't how he wanted to say it. So do it again. It wasn't the crew, it was Bob Hope who kept making them do it over and over. So on one of the takes a young guy with black hair came up to Mr. Hope and says they got it, they can put it together, meaning they got enough takes they could make it work. Bob Hope tells him, this is a Christmas Special, if it isn't right in one take it isn't good enough. Then he says to the guy "We dont do things half assed for Christmas". Whoah! Bob Hope wasn't playing around. He was going to be funny...or else. Every once in a while Bob Hope would look at the crowd and say something like, After we had been standing out there for an hour freezing he would say things like "So you wanted to be in showbiz, how do you like it, fun aint it?" Another time Miss America gets out, he didn't say the line he said "Ill tell you what, you stand here, Ill get in the Limo and you greet me, maybe you can remember my line". Mr. Hope wasnt disrespectful to the crowd or anything like that, but dang if he wasnt going to get that right and be funny no matter how long we had to stand out there or how many people had to freeze to death. Since then when I see actors complain about working with a director or another actor that wants them to do a scene over and over, I remember that evening Bob Hope filmed that. That did not look like fun for the crew, that looked like work. Everything had to be reset, and Bob Hope, mad then smiling for the scene and it looked like he was really happy, then mad, happy, mad, happy. If you had walked up when he was in happy mode, and not seen him mad you would have thought he was actually happy. He did that when it was time to start. It looked genuine, but it was acting, he was really working.

Johnny didn't even like Bob Hope because his whole act/appearance was staged to go a specific way. Pre arranged questions to benefit Hope's mental capacity

That wasn't the only reason though, he found his carefully cultivated "nice" persona, pre-written and vetted jokes by others disguised as original and spontaneous, and backroom politicking by virtue of his stature within the network to be off-putting. It seems his biggest turnoff was anyone he perceived as not genuine, a reason he really went out of his way to expose Uri Geller, forbade Joan Rivers from coming back, and allied with Letterman and not Leno.
ThamiumOne
ThamiumOne پیش 4 ماه
That wasn't as much of an issue back at the time this was from (early 70s). Bob was considerably sharper and conversational back then, unlike the mid 1980s and later. I'd bet very little of this interview was scripted. Just compare this appearance to most of his last several...the difference is striking.

Bob Hope hardly known in Turkey. We Turks grew up with the movies of Jerry Lewis.I was able to watch a few films of Bobe Hope.I don't know why.Danny Kaye is much more popular in Turkey.Although I have watched very few films, I think Bob Hope is an extraordinarily gifted and great comedian. He is a legend for me...I love old American movies. Now movies have more sexuality, swearing, violence and gloom.

Johnny didn't like Bob Hope but he loved Jack Benny and cried when he died.
KalOrtPor
KalOrtPor پیش 3 ماه
Jack Benny died only 2 weeks after this......Johnny patterned his comic style after him early on, and Jack was viewed as the legend of legends to everybody. Johnny disliked Bob Hope for many of the reasons he wasn't fond of Jay Leno, mainly a sense of inauthenticity personally and professionally. He didn't like his overreliance on writers and taking all the credit, being image-conscious but acting modest and pretending he wasn't, and being forced by the network to put Hope on the show and take control whenever, making Johnny stick to whatever carefully scripted exchanges he prepared in advance.

TheIrishrogue68
TheIrishrogue68 پیش 3 ماه
Matt Maze Hope appeared on the Tonight Show 131 times during the Carson years. May we all be "hated" that much in our own professional lives! Hope in his dotage was an increasingly difficult guest towards the end though so you're probably right about Carson dreading his appearances. There must've been contractual obligations that Carson had to abide by having him on so often.
ThamiumOne
ThamiumOne پیش 4 ماه
@Matt Maze - It was something that developed especially in the later years, as Bob had to practically be guided through the interview, and could barely hear Johnny's questions. Comparing this one to most of his later ones is like night and day. He's 10 times more interactive and engaged here than those later ones -- that's really when Johnny began to regret having him on, not so much during this era. To Johnny's credit though - he issued a very respectful statement honoring Bob when he passed in 2003.

I don't think he hated Hope being on his show( after all Hope appeared on the Tonight Show more times than any other performer) as much as he was irritated by his lack of spontaneity. Hope was nevertheless really "on" that night and didn't need any cue cards.

Hope isn't any more History than the other 6 names that land has had. You mean the United Airport, Union Air Terminal, Or the Lockheed Air Terminal? Hope's was just one that came late in 2003 so it's still the old Lockheed land in my mind. In WWII that land was jammed with bombers and fighters being built with "aluminum overcast" all the time. That's History. Besides, Hope lived in Toluca Lake not Burbank.
