This is great! A videotaped version and not the kinescope that always aired. I would love to know if the whole show exists? Thank-you for this rare telecast.

This aired Oct. 5th, 1965. The actress was Carol Andreson (who would do a Mission Impossible). Did they tape it a day in advance back then?

Didn't Groucho also have a long standing correspondence with the comic Dan Rowan of Rowan and Martin?

I love how quiet it gets when Carson reads the letter, then Groucho breaks the ice with humor. Sincerity and humility.

This was on one of Carson's occasional pre-1972 appearances in Hollywood. The show was based from 30 Rock until 1972.

Johnny Carson was a mainstay in my house growing up, as it used to come on right after the news. Love watching Groucho, one of the comedians I miss the most from that era. And Johnny Carson still is reminiscent of an era where smoking on TV was still acceptable by society. And look at the size of the ashtray on the desk, would you. I think we had one about that size at home...

"Say the secret word and Groucho will come to your house." Great lol moment. And the eyebrow raise makes it even funnier. And then Groucho's reply, "My dressing room isn't good enough for her." That's the icing on the cake.

I wish the people posting these extremely RARE 1960's Tonight Shows would give a little bit of the backstory as-to where these tapes were ultimately found. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say they've been sitting in someone's dusty garage in Iowa or Wyoming or were recently discovered in an attic in Burbank. The story itself would be an added interest to the clips posted here on IRitem. At any rate, these historic clips are greatly appreciated. Thanks for posting them.

For those who have commented, the woman is Carol Andreson, who was an actress and played a nurse on "Dr. Kildare". Yes, that's George Segal sitting down near the end. Also, Paul Revere and the Raiders appeared on this telecast.

He and The Brothers Marx were some of the funniest performers that ever lived. Off the wall humor at it's finest. Groucho wrote 5 books and they are hysterical. I have read everything I can get my hands on about their comedy career...we will never see their like again. Also, watch the 59-minute interview he had with Dick Cavett. He was pushing 80 and as sharp as a tack, Cavett could barely get a word in...Legendary...
Woo2fly30 پیش 7 ماه
So cool to watch Grouch reminisce about the 'old' days in a video that was filmed in the 1960's
KalOrtPor پیش 3 ماه
It is, and he was already 75 by this time. It's interesting that "Animal Crackers" came out in 1930 and he was turning 40 that year. The vaudevillians that were legends to Carson were mostly still sharp, witty and humorous even with most having been alive in the 1800s.

Believe it or not, I remember reading an interview in a magazine with Schwarzenegger back in the late 80s or early 90s. The author of the interview claimed that Arnold lit a cigar and told him; "when this cigar is done so is the interview." Different times, indeed!

Groucho was largely self educated. He had a love of literature and was an absolute fanatic for good grammar in writing. I saw him go toe to toe with Truman Capote and Dick Cavett once over grammar. His letters would be an asset to the Smithsonian vs the tripe written today.

genius isn't showing off, it just flows. His lack of Education had nothing to do with his mind. Either have it or you don't. Showing off is when you tried to mimic geniuses to impress people. For that time in history he was Miles Ahead of everyone else . it's just that his thinking was comic. Looking back at his old movies he could rip someone apart and they wouldn't even know it. Pure genius.

There was no quicker wit or comedic mind better than Groucho, Groucho was to comedy what Elvis was to RocknRoll. The early Marx Brothers movies were genuine works of art and comedy, and Groucho himself being self educated, a voracious reader, a poor child from a large family created an entire genre of comedy. Satire, and there was nobody better. Another genius fading with time.

@It annoys me Since Satire goes back to ancient Rome, I don't think you can really pin it down on anyone person... I should have been more specific and said comedy in film. However I would argue modern satire is more akin to Swift than Shakespeare
