2:35 - When you hear the sound of Carson's laugh like this one here, you knew you were on to a winner and he liked your comedy work. When Johnny belly laughed out loud, was the one thing every comedian and comedy performer wanted to hear.

I enjoyed the brilliantly talented Kevin Pollak greatly, especially his Woody. An easily overlooked aspect of his performance, because the impersonation is so funny, is the writing, which is terribly clever, way more intelligent than is typically used in impersonations

So, the story goes like this (as told by Kevin): He wanted, like every other comedian at the time, to get a shot at The Tonight Show. But he wanted it on his terms. Tonight Show talent scouts came and watched his stand-up gig. Eventually, they said "you're ready." Kevin thought about it and decided against going on. He always wanted to be the guy who went on Carson, straight to the chair, to chat with Johnny. After a few movies, etc., he had gained enough cred and they asked him again to come on the show. But not to do standup. To sit and chat with Johnny. Ballsy, but it worked.

I noticed that too. Also the quip about Carson having his own line of suits, even though it was said as a joke, and Pollack being very nattily dressed came across as almost a bit competitive. I did not know the story of Kevin Pollack turning down the first offer he was given to appear on the Tonight Show. Interesting. All together it shows a lot of confidence in what he was doing.

Ingvar Hallström
Ingvar Hallström پیش 7 ماه
They're not very well planned out, mind you. Notice Carson asks where Pollak is from, twice, and didn't remember the answer, because it's not important. But he asked for a reprise or the Peter Falk impersonation because it was so funny. The planning may not have been more than this: Carson: "Ok so we got a five minute slot with you after Whoopi, so what do you do?" Pollak: "I got some impersonations that I'm pretty famous for?" Carson: "Somebody famous? I mean, will the audience know who it is?" Pollak: "I got Woody Allen, and Peter Falk, and Albert Brooks? Carson: "Nobody does Albert Brooks..." Pollak: "You haven't seen mine?" Carson: "Perfect! You're on!"
