Interesting match. O'Toole is the looped umpire. It was pure Commedia dell'Arte--impromptu madness over very little.

O Toole is a genius ... three sheets to the wind and in total command of a comedic performance - completely off the cuff and improvised. O'Toole was riding the wave and Carson was right along with him ... the days of GREAT TV.

Buddy Hackett helped a lot to save this. O'Toole just showed he could get away with anything because people desired him to be a guest on a talk show, simply to be there. Carson did the best he could and saved the segment without getting angry.

Peter Oriole was a very handsome man in Lawrence of Arabia and his voice was outstanding ,he could quote plays with that lovely voice and today we have nothing in the actors who think they are actors yes he drank , Burton drank, Richard Harris drank but my goodness when they perform they were very happy on stage they were the best actors ever they had a problem with drinking today they pd from drugs at twenty and we just don’t have the caliber of actors we did so I watch the classic movies these gentleman were in. RIP Peter your missed!

What a wonderfully odd interview. And agree with a previous commenter that only Johnny could make the most of it! And I also miss him a lot, but how lucky we are to have the videos. The discussion about cigarettes made me sad, though, because they took Carson from us way too early!

Peter O'Toole a brilliant actor, though he seems a bit sozzled. I think Oliver Reed was often the same. Johnny was a bit of a genius to work through these sorts of situations with a calm sort of acceptance and easygoing reticence, which of course made it very entertaining.

it can GET A LITTLE ROUGH when the BEST comedians are around. Ye wanna STAY on their good side. Get em a drink, a steak - a cab - whatever they want. God forbid a Jimmy Brogan GOES in on ye - why there'll be nothing LEFT. hint: Don't VOLUNTEER any help on Jimmy Brogan's show - (for audience members) Even if he ASKS you to. Get outta there. While ye still CAN. .

Hackett taking over: " I only tell em not to smoke if I love em. I never told YOU, did I?" (not to smoke) -now it's Johny on the defensive. @ "It's show biz, ladies and gentleman, ANYTHING can happen." "You go in on Peter O'Toole - Buddy Hackett goes in on you - just keeps goes around and around and around." (until people get tired of laughing, which can actually happen - you can PRAY to stop laughing once the pop goes off the champagne bottle - pray!) .

"I just think when-the-GUEST-is-on-fire the HOST should SAY something..." (Johny's prolly the one who goaded Peter into "a few drinks" before the appearance. Cuz they're old pals - good pals - this is fun for Johny - he'll never let Peter O'Toole forget this.)

O'Toole and Richard Harris are the most entertaining and candid of interview subjects. Having watched these shows before -- some of which I recall seeing on TV when it aired -- nonethless, I find myself returning multiple times, over time. Because entertainment like this just can't be found. Today's version is like comparing a fine wine to a bottle of ketchup

@dougthedude52 I agree. Maybe in part it is that this generation doesn't quite know or understand what it's like to be in a war or to be without a welfare state or to have to "make do". I'm not sure. It seems we are almost constantly looking to be amused or entertained by someone else. We have lost something somewhere. I do know that there was a certain way of thinking, and a recognition of what it meant to be respectable or classy or even just knowing what it meant to be true to yourself. I suppose you could also say it was grit. I don't think I"m expressing this well, and I certainly hope we aren't emulating the fall of the Roman Empire. But I do have a sinking feeling that we are a bit rudderless. Our compasses are broken. And what has been lost will never quite be fully recovered.
dougthedude52
dougthedude52 پیش 15 روز
@Dodie Odie I agree, though I think the decline started in the 60s and somehow did accelerate in the 90s. I think we will compare the era we are in right now to the Middle Ages, where humanity was in a state of obvious decline. The best evidence of our decline are these old TV clips. People were so much smarter and tougher. The entire current generation could be described as having severe learning impairment compared to the men and women we see in these clips. It’s like they were another species altogether we have changed so much.

This segment is priceless. But what I find really incredible is that O'Toole outlived both Carson and Hackett, and he was not that much younger than either of them. He looked close to death in this era. Apparently, he managed to pull back from the brink, at least back to a point not very far from the brink, but still.... Luckily.
