so I was reading a very good book called " The Battle for Bond" which documents the making of "Thunderball" and how that film right was awarded to a producer outside the official Bond franchise, and "Never Say Never Again" is a remake of "Thunderball" by that same producer. So Connery here is talking to Johnny Carson about how he dislikes scuba diving and being underwater, but in the original Thunderball 1960s film Bond spends an awful lot of time swimming under water and indeed Bond looks to be swimming beautifully underwater with his scuba diving gear, very graceful like a real pro, so how can that be? Well amazingly on "Thunderball" Connery had a perfect body double match who also happened to be a professional scuba diver with 30 years experience underwater, he did all the swimming in the underwater scenes for Connery, his physique is identical to Connery's , it really looks like Sean doing the swimming in Thunderball but it is not, Sean does a few close ups to complete the illusion, famously his diving mask changes colour from black to orange in one close up scene, so there is a certain irony here that Connery is talking about the audience not believing the narrative if an obvious stunt double is doing the action scenes, so the trick is to have a convincing stunt double!!! on Never Say Never again Connery's stunt double was Vic Armstrong, an expert horseman and fight arranger, he was also Harrison Ford's stunt double on the Indiana Jones films.
John-Giovanni Corda
John-Giovanni Corda پیش 15 روز
In more than one way, Never Say Never is closer to the Thunderball book than the Thunderball movie itself.

Probably wasn't allowed to, but it was a pity Sean couldn't spend a minute or two talking about his life before Bond. For example: Sean's very first UK television appearance (around 1958/59) he starred as a Boxer in 'Requiem for a Heavyweight' . Or, his work before TV and Films as a Milk-delivery lad in his home District of Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. Or, when he worked as a Coffin Polisher for the Edinburgh Company.. J & T.Scott of George St, Edinburgh. I also worked for the same Company as an Apprentice Upholsterer, in J & T Scott's Factory workshops, in Devon Place, Haymarket, Edinburgh. Sean was known in the workshops as 'Big Tam' and he really was a big guy. Very popular too!

In the '60s and '70s, kids were smacked in supermarkets, they were hit with slippers and occasionally belts at home, hit by teachers with rulers, and caned by headmasters. Unless you are 50 yrs old, or older, you can't really understand how it was. These days, a woman slaps a man, and the guy will knock her out unconscious with a left hook. That didn't happen in the '70s, and men would get slapped regularly for an insult. It's just different times when an occasional slap didn't mean much.

Too bad Connery is doing promotion for THE WORST Bond film he ever starred in. Many of us think Never Say Never Again is a strong candidate for THE WORST Bond film ever made. Never Say Never Again was embarrassing. And that's saying something after the previous Bond film Connery did which was Diamonds Are Forever. I acknowledge Connery as the definitive Bond and four of his films were excellent (From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice) and the first was at least enjoyable but better than many of us give it credit for because it was the prototype Bond film. 1 Connery Bond film in the "official cycle" was bad (Diamonds Are Forever). Never Say Never Again (unofficial, not canon-acknowledged) was AWFUL. Moore had a low point or two in his Bond cycle, too, but nothing as bad as Never Say Never Again!
AvengerII
AvengerII پیش 18 روز
@Peter Brandt Look, if you want to be Eon's little messenger, be my guest. The fact of the matter is that the TV adaptation of Casino Royale aired EIGHT YEARS before Dr. No. Don't rewrite history because you didn't like the original actor or are ignorant of the facts. What happened, happened. Don't fall the for the studios and media's tendency to rewrite history to suit their narrative. They do that for much more important things than TV shows and movies. That said, Barry Nelson was still the first actor to play James Bond anywhere, PERIOD. If you want to accept lies to the contrary, that's on you but that's NOT history.
Peter Brandt

@AAAnderson055 "Hahaha . . ." I guess that clarifies the point. No doubt Mr Lazenby is feeling suitably humbled. By the way, fellow Bondophiles, he issued a very kind, classy statement on the passing of Diana Rigg. This despite the fact that she hardly had good things to say about him!
Thomas Chacko
Thomas Chacko پیش 4 ماه
@AvengerII Actually, Avenger, I am fully aware of the history of the Bond films. Long before Eon entered the picture, Kevin McClory and Ian Fleming had developed ten scripts and storylines for James Bond, including a possible TV series. Fleming grew tired of all the film-world haggling, and went home to Jamaica to write a new novel . . . "THUNDERBALL"! McClory sued Fleming for writing the novel without sharing credit. (McClory, a long-time Bahamas resident, had originated the Bond/underwater scenario.) It was only after McClory won the case that the novel's first page bore the footnote, "Based on an original story by Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ian Fleming." (You also see this on-screen in "Thunderball" and "Never Say Never Again.") When McClory served as co-producer for the "Thunderball" film, he signed a deal with Eon, granting him the rights to his own Bond films after ten years - which brings us to 1976. He then collaborated with Len Deighton and Sean Connery on a new screenplay, "Warhead," involving an underwater SPECTRE plot in the Bermuda Triangle and New York, ending with a battle at the Statue of Liberty! Eon blocked McClory for years, saying that "Warhead" went beyond the scope of his rights, which were supposedly limited to a remake of "Thunderball." Jack Schwartzman, an entertainment lawyer and producer, purchased McClory's rights only to the "Thunderball" story. Throughout the making of "Never Say Never Again," he had to fight off Eon in the London High Court. To me, the end result was worth it; you disagree - fair enough! McClory's ongoing fight with Eon was because SPECTRE - the cartel headed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld - was created exclusively for "Thunderball," NOT for the other novels. After McClory's passing in 2006, his estate sold off all rights to the Eon/MGM/UA group . . . And the beat goes on. By the way, while I don't write these things when I'm drunk, I do enjoy a vodka martini - shaken, not stirred - with a good Bond film. Yes, that includes "Never Say Never Again." Cheers!
AvengerII
AvengerII پیش 4 ماه
@J.J. Chacko doesn't know or appreciate the history of Thunderball's production. Yes, this IS the story that got Fleming sued. The character of Blofeld and the Thunderball scenario were denied to Eon Productions for decades until they finally settled this business. They did NOT bring back Blofeld officially until the Daniel Craig era for this reason (although the Blofeld character last appeared directly in "Diamonds Are Forever" played by an actor with hair). This is why, for instance, they did not call the "bald man in the wheel chair stroking a white cat" Blofeld in For Your Eyes Only Blofeld. Legally, they couldn't BUT they could imply he was Blofeld as he was seen in You Only Live Twice.
