I lived in Philly when Rocky came out. The whole city went nuts! The radio stations were deluged with calls requesting the theme song. They asked people to stop calling, saying they couldn't play it any more often than they already were, which was about every 15 minutes. Everyone went to Institute of Art to get their picture taken at the top of the steps.

Rocky character is a mix of two heavyweights. Chuck Wepner and Joe Frazier. Wepner was the white heavyweight from Bayonne, NJ, who was a huge underdog against Ali, he even had mannerisms in the way he spoke similar to Rocky; he also took his bout with Ali into the 15th round. He also scored a stunning knockdown of Ali with a body shot that greatly exited the crowd. In reality, Chuck stepped on Ali's foot as he punched him in the body, so Muhammad fell down on his back on the canvas. Not a legit knock down even though ref ruled it a knockdown. It goes down in history books as a knockdown. Joe Frazier was a tough boxer from Philadelphia, and like Rocky, he worked in a meat factory, - and yup, Joe used to punch the meat. Joe of course was a great boxer already when he first fought Ali. Joe was an olympic gold medalist and in pros he had knocked out Jimmy Ellis, Jerry Quarry and Bob Foster before he fought Muhammad. So, yeah a definite mix of Frazier and the white underdog, Chuck Wepner. Not all Joe, not all Chuck. Apollo Creed is also based alot on the fast talking master showman, the great champion, Muhammad Ali. Stallone was a fun actor to watch already in Lords of Flatbush. but he owes a debt of gratitude at least to great heavyweights in 1970s and the sport of boxing, itself. He got the idea to write Rocky after watching that white underdog. Chuck Eepner shock so many people by knocking down Ali and taking him into th e 15th round. Most thought Chuck, a notorious bleeder would get stopped early by Ali. There was a preflight press conference very similar to Rocky where Chuck says things and acts very similarly to the way Rocky did when he looked in camera and said things to Adrian. Chuck was a boxer the average Joe in America, every guy, so to speak could relate to, just like they relate to Rocky.

nycinstyle
nycinstyle پیش 8 ماه
@Rusty Nailz I think Stallone initially wanted to put Wepner in Rocky 2, but things didn't work out. Stallone did put Duran in the movie as the boxer Rocky sparred with and couldn't hit. Of course, he put Frazier in Rocky 1. He also initially tried casting Earnie Shavers as Clubber Lang in Rocky 3. However, when they lightly sparred with each other, Stallone asked Shavers to turn it up. Shavers then soon dropped Stallone to the canvas/caused him to call a time out with a body shot. Stallone says he went to the bathroom because of the impact to his abdomen; he went to throw up. Stallone later said "Forget it, Earnie. No one is ever going to believe that I can beat you". Lol

In 2025, you and 20M other people will be making movies at home and peddling them to Netflix, just like musicians use Pro Tools and hawk their wares on iTunes-usually to abject silence interrupted by a few crickets. If everyone can do it, nothings special.

@BrantheBroken All that may be true however that doesn't explain why said chat show hosts need to bring it up all the time today! The point that was made was that back then politics wasn't brought up for cheap shots every five seconds. I prefer the old days. They actually talked to the guests and didn't polarise the viewers with their political opinions. Just an opinion.

T Dunph
T Dunph پیش 9 ماه
@Corno di Bassetto You could at least admit that you don't really know what your talking about instead of getting out the Thesaurus and having a field day. This was Sly's first appearance on the Tonight Show. I am sure Mr Carson didn't want to intimidate him by making the interview complicated or have Sly become embarrassed by coming across as being too self involved with himself. It was a rather simple, yet informative interview. As with your criticism of Mr Carson, I defy you to find ANYONE nowadays and going backwards to at least when he retired in 1992, who you can mention in the same breath as Johnny. As for your piss poor (yet mildly amusing) reference to stepping on one's opinions versus stepping on an actor's lines? That doesn't make any sense at all. When someone were to step over an actor's lines it would most likely be considered talking over the actor or interrupting them. In the case of "stepping on a person's opinion" that doesn't have the connotation. Stepping one someone's opinion would be constructive criticism., which most people nowadays cannot tolerate thus becoming irate and melting like a snowflake. Melt away kind sir, melt away!
T Dunph
T Dunph پیش 9 ماه
@Corno di Bassetto if you make a comparison to Sly talking then and the way he's been talking over the last 25 years it is slower now He was clearly nervous. Johnny seemed his normal self. I guess you observed it differently.
